Why do we work?

I have got to admit that this question has popped up in to my head a million times, that is if I can even count the number of times. This time I will give my self a break and ask you the same question. ”What makes you go to work every day?”

In life there are very many things that give meaning to our life, work having been proved to be one of the major factors. Work is “exertion directed to produce or accomplish something.” But, should all your effort be put in to something you really want to do or you are forced to do? Should it be your choice or should circumstances govern your choice?

Truth be told there are a lot of reasons as to why people work stretching from the love of it,  making the world a better place, having meaning in life, staying away from trouble, putting up our families, living a  comfortable life, etc. I could go on and on and fail to exhaust the reasons, but most importantly there those “who work just for the love of money.” On this I must comment.

Working for money is essential since we can not work for free like the people who serve the church or volunteer for our community. in fact even volunteers are rewarded. I know we have responsibilities that we should meet and that this money that we make should make all these ends meet. What I can’t fathom though is the need to work just for the sake of making money and not only just money, but the need to make lots of it. Is it that when you have lots of it you will find happiness and satisfaction? Or is it that if you have lots of money you will be respected? Because even those that seem to have lots of it are not satisfied and seem to have way lots of many problems than those that actually have the money, incidentally bringing me to a major question, Should we work because we love what we do or should we aim for the yields first before anything else?

Mother Theresa once said that “a miracle is not that we do this work, but that we are happy to do it.” I totally second her on this. If you love your job first you are going to get all the long term benefits that come with loving what you do. And not just the love of it but that you will thrive in happiness because of the love of it. You will get experience, recognition, respect, and trust from your colleagues, promotions from your bosses to mention but a few rewards in return simply because you put your heart to it.

This juxtaposed to those that work just for the money, believe me you are going to hit a hard wall at one time in life along the way. This is when you will realize that actually you have spent years doing something that seems meaningless in life and having nothing to be proud of except your money. If one asked you what you love about your job you will imprudently say the “money is great.” Some people do not even work to their expectations and end up producing half baked work leaving the rest for those who put their heart to it and yet are being exploited at the same time. And then when asked what exactly you really like except the money, you will have no answer. This is what I would gladly call “gumming up the works” and if you have sense to understand, you will know that it is awkward.

Now I believe that given the effort you put in any thing you love doing, there will always be great returns. One will be able to make as much money as they need. All they need is inventiveness and creativity not forgetting a full heart of hard work and sacrifice. With this you will put in to consideration how you are going to attract clients to your work, how you will keep them coming and what steps to take in expanding what you believe in.

Like Martin Luther king, Jr. Once said “whatever your life's work is, do it well. A man should do his job so well that the living, the dead, and the unborn could do it no better.”

It is the love for your job that will always inspire you to wake up every day no matter what the situation. It is that dedication that will bless you and give you prosperity. Whether you have a harsh boss, a terrible supervisor, terrible workmates and that the business is not thriving as you planned for it, it will not matter because you love what you do. It will not matter because you have a goal in building a career and becoming bigger  after all the obstacles mentioned above among others are only trivial since you will be headed to a better place.

So I will ask you once again, what makes you go to work every day?
